Day 10 - Mount Surprise to Normanton
With some sadness we packed up this morning. We have really enjoyed Bedrock Village at Mount Surprise and would happily come back here. As a footnote to last night's post, the wood fired pizza was excellent. I wandered over to the pizza oven just as it went into the oven so it was hot and fresh when we got it - and delicious. The poor cook was so hot by the time he had done ours - the 56th pizza for the night! So, we were on the road by 9:30am and heading to Georgetown. The road between Mount Surprise and Georgetown was at times pretty ordinary, with only a single strip of bitumen down the middle of the road. OK while there is no-one else on it, but when you have to pull one set of wheels over onto the gravel it's not so ideal. Anyway, we survived and arrived in Georgetown for morning tea. We went to the Tourist Information Centre as we were prepared to have a look around town at anything interesting but the lady there basically told us there was nothing in Georgetown and we should keep going. With that less than welcome, we got back on the road to Croydon. After another 70 or so kilometres, the road widened and was back to two lanes of bitumen which made travel easier. We arrived in Croydon for lunch, which was a reasonable chicken burger at the supermarket (of course!). Again we visited the tourist information centre which was a lot more informative and attractive but we decided to keep going. A good road from Croydon for the remaining 148 kilometres to Normanton. We had decided to camp at a camping spot on the Leichardt Lagoon (complete with crocs!) but missed the turnoff and there was no room to turn around so we kept going to Normanton. Upon arrival at the caravan park, we were lucky to acquire a drive through site so we were soon set up. A swim in the pool, a look around town (including the purple pub!) and it was back to the van for beer o'clock. It was definitely time for me to cook again so after a lovely pork dish cooked outside, we indulged in one of the luxuries of this van combined with a caravan park - and watched TV!
Tracey being eaten by the biggest local of Normanton - Krys the Croc, who at 8.63m hold the Guiness Record as the largest crocodile ever captured - and by a woman!
