Day 37 - Mataranka to Daly Waters
Yesterday at Bitter Springs, Lisa was talking to a lady who had been at
Daly Waters the night before. She said they had arrived at the caravan park
just after lunch and ended up in the overflow overflow caravan park section
(with no power). Upon hearing that, we vowed to get up early and be in Daly
Waters a bit after check out time.
It was only 167 kilometres down the road so sure enough, we arrived by
10:30am and were among the first in. Upon registering and paying at the pub, we
were then guided to our sites by a man on a bicycle with a horse mounted on his
handlebars. He crammed us in in lines - Paul later described it as being loaded
onto a ferry (ie. Spirit of Tasmania).
After set up, we had morning tea because it was still so early! The wind
was also picking up and the place was a dustbowl so sitting outside was not the
best. A bit of a wander around to check out the souvenir shop and the servo
(all run and operated by the pub) and that was pretty much Daly Waters.
Greg and I headed to the bistro for lunch and were enjoying a fabulous
steak sandwich when we saw Natalie and Hayden walk in. A couple of weeks ago in
Darwin, we were talking about Greg's birthday and how/where we would be
celebrating it and Natalie suggested they might be able to come down to partake
in the celebrations so here they were. It was great to see them. After a catch
up over lunch, they went to have a 'nana nap' (the youth of today - I don't
know) while I baked a birthday cake and OK, maybe Greg had a nana nap too.
We headed back to the bistro at about 4:30pm, consious that a table for 8
would not be easy so determined to get in early. Most of us had pre-ordered
the famous "Beef and Barra" which was to be served at 6:30pm. So we
had some drinks, the live entertainment started at 5:30pm and we were having a
good time.
I was at the bar at about 6:30pm when the beef and barra came off
the BBQ, cooked to order so the "Mallett Gang's" order was called! And it was fantastic! Yummy, tender and beautifully cooked. A better
birthday dinner we couldn't have asked for. We had a few more drinks, chatted
some more, laughed at Natalie and Hayden dancing with the grey nomads before we
called it a night. It had really cooled off by this stage and we were all in
long pants and jumpers. It would seem our warm weather has come to an end.
