Day 19 - Lorella Springs to Tomato Island (Roper Bar)
A day on the road, with not a lot to see or do. We packed up early and
settled our account, having a chat to the Station owner on the way out. He was
heading to Darwin tomorrow and was contemplating going the way we were (he
normally goes the other way because there is more bitumen, even though it is
more than 100km further). He was also bemoaning the fact the mining company who
is doing some exploratory work on his land have constructed a haul road but he
isn't allowed to use it. We think we saw that road later and it was like a
superhighway in the middle of nowhere.
50km down the road was the turn off to the Southern Lost City, which we saw
from the air yesterday. It had been recomended we see it from the ground too
but I missed the turn off as the grader was blowing dust over the sign. So we
gave up on that and kept going down the road. Parts of it were OK, others were
rocky, and there were plenty of creek crossings - both dry and wet. At times,
the road would come good, then corrugations or rockiness would set in again.
Mid afternoon we arrived at where I had planned we would camp - amidst some
ruins on a lagoon. It would appear the ruins were former Station buildings but
it was all looking pretty dry and ordinary so we kept going towards Roper Bar.
A further 40km down the road, we came across Tomato Island (you wouldn't
recognise it now, Neill and Jude!) and so we set up under some lovely trees,
right next to the magnificent Roper River and enjoyed a much needed beer.
