Coober Pedy to Marla - Friday 7th August

It was a cold night in Coober Pedy last night, so much so that we even had to turn the heater on through the night. I'm saving the second (thick) doona for along the Track when we have no power.

So we were in no hurry to get up this morning. Our neighbours left early and we eventually packed up and headed into Coober Pedy at about 9:30am. We went to the supermarket to stock up on a few items, to the water bowser to make sure our tanks were as full as they could be for the track, and then to the bakery where we bought morning tea and had planned to buy bread but would you believe, the baker was sick last night so there was no fresh baked bread.

After morning tea, we turned north onto the Stuart Highway for the 231km drive to Marla. It was an easy, uneventful drive, although a little haunting to drive past the spot where we were one of the first on scene to a fatal car accident last year and being the only ones with a satellite phone, we called it in to summon the RFDS and police. So at about 2ish we pulled into Marla to fill up firstly with fuel, then book into the campground at the back of the roadhouse. And what a pleasant surprise it was! Green grass, powered sites, two swimming pools (a little cool at the moment although it was a pleasant 20C today) and plenty of room. So we spent a very pleasant afternoon in the sun, waiting for our friends to arrive. Then it was drinks time and a good catch up before start the Oodnadatta Track tomorrow.
